Heredity Unit Week of 5/18 updated 6/1
~Introduction to Heredity~
Why do you look the way that you look? Why do children often look like their parents? Why do they sometimes not?
We will learn the answers to these questions, as well as:
What is heredity? How is heredity studied?
Begin by watching the first three videos linked to the right ----->
Begin by reading thee first two pages of the Heredity Textbook Chapter (first link). Complete a KWL chart on the Goal Setting page (page 2).
Next, quickly scan the rest of the chapter pages (NOT the answer key!), writing down all of the words in bold font. This is our vocabulary list for this unit.
OR use the Quizlet vocabulary link for the word list!!
Once you have copied all of the vocabulary words, go back to the beginning of the chapter (page 3). You will now make your way through the chapter, reading and completing the exercises. (You do not need to perform the Extracting DNA experiment, unless you want to!)
As you read the chapter, write the definitions of the bold vocabulary words. The words are defined in the chapter, but feel free to look up the definitions in a dictionary or on the computer if you wish.
Try the Exercises:
As we have done in class, in addition to answering the questions and trying the exercises in the chapter try to summarize each section. Remember, take it one paragraph and one page at a time, putting only the most important information IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
NOTE: The chapter begins to discuss dihybrid Punnett squares. If these don't make sense to you, you can stick to practicing with only 4 section Punnett squares, or if you prefer monohybrid Punnett squares. (This means it's okay to work only with Punntt squares made of 4 squares on page 13, not the ones with 16 like on page 14).
Watch the videos if you want more practice:
There are videos under the Links section that review these topics and vocabulary further. Feel free to watch them as you make your way through the chapter, or save them for the end as an extra review/ study tool.
Practice Punnett Squares:
If you would like more practice making and reading Punnett Squares, there are links to more Punnett Square practice exercises. There are also practice quizzes that can help you prepare for the Final Assessment of the unit.
When you reach the final pages that are titled REVIEW, answer the questions as best you can without looking at your notes. This will serve as our final assessment of the unit, so you may want to take some time to study your notes and vocabulary words before trying the test. If you don't wish to complete the review without your notes, that is alright too.
When you have finished the final assessment, view the answer key for the Heredity Textbook Chapter. Review all the questions that you have answered and correct your work. You may have to look back at your notes if you are not sure why you've gotten something wrong.
As always, go at your own pace. Take a look at all of the materials, but the games, quizzes, and extra practice exercises are all optional. Your goal for this lesson is to complete the chapter and the Final Assessment. You can send any of your extra work to Jill at email@example.com.
