Wednesday, Dec. 3 - Adding Integers
This is something everyone should review. It's very important to watch the video. This is the best way to understand the lesson.
I like to think of positive and negative numbers like money. If I owe $5 (-5) and I pay $3 (+3) on that debt, then I only owe $2 (-2). In other words, -5+3= -2
So here are a couple of rules to get you started:
Rule 1: Adding positive numbers to positive numbers—this is normal addition.
Rule 2: Adding positive numbers to negative numbers—count forward the amount you’re adding.
Rule 3: Adding negative numbers to positive numbers—count backwards, as if you were subtracting.
Rule 4: Adding negative numbers to negative numbers—ignore the addition sign, and treat the problem like subtraction (counting backwards).
The video will have some shortcuts and strategies. It includes subtraction, but we'll get to that next week.
This is a hard thing to grasp, so don't get discouraged. And if you have a problem, text me!
