Wednesday, Sept. 24-- Decimals and Place Value

Objective: By the end of this lesson, you will understand place value and the difference between the place value of whole numbers and decimals.

Decimals are essentially fractions -- parts of a whole. Just as we have ones, tens, hundreds in the place value of whole numbers, we have place values for decimals.

1.2 -- this is one and two tenths.

So notice a few things:

1. After the decimal, you start with tenths. THERE IS NO ONETHS in decimals!!!!!

2. The further you get from the decimal point, the smaller the number is. 1.2 (two tenths) is larger than 1.02 (two one-hundredths). If you think about this, it makes sense. If you have two out of 10 pieces, you will have more if you have two out of 100 pieces.

3. Decimals are fractions -- parts of a whole. Any number in front of the decimal is a whole number. Any number after the decimal is part of your fractions.

4. Take a look at the attached place value chart. Study it. This will help you make sense of place value.
